Brevard, North Carolina

Margaret Castle (Peggy) McGoldrick died at her home in Brevard on October 9, 2019 at age 91. She was born August 4, 1926 in Shiloh, New Jersey to Kenneth and Mary Roberts. A self-professed tomboy, she grew up on her parents' farm in southern New Jersey and developed an early love of animals, especially horses.
Peggy was a graduate of Hannah More Academy and the University of Pennsylvania. After completing the U.S. Marine Corps' first post-war Women Officers Training School she was commissioned a second lieutenant. She was called to active duty during the Korean War and served as Women's Liaison Officer at HQ 4th Marine Corps Reserve and Recruitment District in Philadelphia.
Married in 1952, she and her husband Jack raised six children in Chatham, N.J. and Darien, Ct. before moving to Brevard in 1986. Peggy was an early member of the Transylvania County Arts Council and was herself an accomplished watercolorist. A founding board member of the local therapeutic riding program, Free Rein, she volunteered there for many years. She kept a horse on See Off Mountain and rode at least once or twice a week until her horse, Montana, died in 2016. A member of the Brevard Health and Racquet Club, she played tennis regularly until this June. She has also unofficially mentored several local youngsters over the years.
A member of Sacred Heart Church in Brevard for 30 years, she was also a direct descendent of William Brewster, a leader of the Pilgrims who sailed to America on the Mayflower in 1620.
Her survivors include her husband John "Jack" McGoldrick; six children and their spouses: Bob McGoldrick and Elaine of Westport, NY; Kevin McGoldrick and Deborah of Spring, TX, Meg Tweedy and Jim of Darien, CT; Mary McGinnis and John of Durham, NC, Chris McGoldrick and Susan of Darien and Anne Koo and Jack of Denver, CO. She is also survived by a brother, Kenneth Roberts, of Cannon Falls, MN and eight grandchildren.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 16, 2017 with Father Shawn O'Neal officiating. Military Rites will be performed by the United States Marine Corps and the Transylvania County Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Transylvania County Arts Council, 349 South Caldwell St., Brevard, NC 28712
