Mario L. Guidette died Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at The Oaks of Brevard at the age of 105. Lou, as he is fondly called, was born on February 19, 1909 in Springfield, MA. He graduated the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in 1928. He served as a Marine Engineer for ten years, three of which were in the US Merchant Marines during WW II. He was assigned to a Liberty Ship named the "SS West Nohno", which was scuttled as a part of the Block Ship Section of "Operation Gooseberry" at Utah Beach on "D" Day in 1944. He was promoted to the rank of Commander in the US Maritime Services in 1946. He received an honorable discharge from the US Army; and the Coast Guard, and a certificate of continuous service from the US Merchant Marine Corp. Mr. Guidette was awarded the Atlantic War Zone Bar; The European-North Africa Bar with a "Star"; and the Pacific and Far East bars
Mr. Guidette resided in Livingston, NJ for 55 years before coming to Brevard in 2006.
He retired in 1976 after 22 years, as Chief Engineer with the Whippany Paper Company, Whippany, NJ. He has been a member of the Livingston, NJ Old Guard since 1980 and is also a member of the Veterans Association, Post 201.
He was predeceased by his wife, Irene, of 65 years in 2002 and a daughter Linda M. Jones in 1987. Surviving are a daughter Diane E. Tefft of Brevard, NC, a grandson Charles L. Jones and a great grandson, Connor A. Jones of Republic, MO.
The Moore Funeral Home is coordinating local arraignments with the Quinn Hopping Funeral Home in Livingston NJ. A Mass will be held at the St. Raphael Parish on Mount Pleasant Ave. Livingston NJ at 10:00 am, Tuesday, March 18th. Burial will follow at The Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover, NJ.
