Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Hyatt Caccavale passed away on Saturday, July 2, 2016. She was 93 and resided at the Bridge at Lake Pointe Landing in Hendersonville.
She is survived by her husband Philip Caccavale, her son Robert and wife Emma, her daughter Clara Josephs and husband Jerry, her granddaughter Gina Greenberg and husband Jason, and her great grand daughter Lilliana. She leaves behind 5 siblings: Sarah Williard, Etta Tipton, James Hyatt, Paul Hyatt and Dorothy Reinhardt. .
Betty was born on January 6, 1923 to Walter and Clara Hyatt in Walnut Grove, South Carolina. She attended Spartanburg High School and received her BA from Queens College, NY at the age of 55.
Immediately after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Betty enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in Washington, D.C.as Specialist Q First Class Cryptologist. She worked decoding Japanese messages. She met her future husband at a USO dance in Camp Croft. Together they raised 2 children and ran a successful fuel oil and plumbing business in Queens, NY. They retired to the Asheville area where they both continued their active involvement in church and volunteer activities. In February they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.
Funeral services for Mary (Betty) Caccavale will be held at 12:00 noon on Thursday, July 7, 2016 at Brevard First United Methodist Church with Rev. Mike Holder and Rev. Lauren Sims-Salata officiating. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Gardens of Memory in pisgha Forest. A wake will be held at Moore-Blanchard Funerals & Cremations in Brevard on Wednesday, July 6, 2016 from 5-7 pm.
