Maxine Douglas

Maxine Dills Douglas, 83, of Brevard died August 9, 2013. She was born November 14, 1929. This was the beginning of the Depression. Born to the late Zena V. Dills who delivered rations to families during the depression and the late John Floyd Dills, who worked for the TVA to build the Fontana Dam. She was preceded in death by a daughter; Linda Kay Peterson, three sisters; Margie Petit, Helen Baynard and Nora Hutchins.

Maxine had great fondness for her Aunt Hope, Uncles, Eckle and Lowell. Maxine was born in the woods of the Nantahala Gorge in Swain County but lived most of her life in Brevard, NC. The sixth of nine children, she was born at home with a doctor and nurse wife, delivered by caesarian section and weighed under three pounds. She was wrapped up and placed on a pillow by the wood stove. She was named for the nurse.

Maxine graduated from Brevard High School and completed upholstery school. She was a Certified Nursing Assistant and cared for many people in her lifetime. Maxine enjoyed her friends at Koala and Meals on Wheels.

She worked hard throughout her life sewing for Belk's and Ruth Original's, CTS and as a pre-school teacher for New Adventure. She enjoyed her work as a CNA and volunteering for many jobs. She was an excellent seamstress making every stitch with love and perfection. She was a master quilter, and enjoyed embroidery, crochet and many other crafts. Maxine had a green thumb for gardening, sharing her veggies with everyone and cooking them herself. She also enjoyed growing beautiful flowers in her yard and listening to music.

Love for her family and her cat, Tinkerbell, and friends were most important in her life. Maxine loved her animals and pet white squirrels.

She is survived by one son; John Thomas Douglas and wife Leslie of SC, one daughter; Zena Suzzette Douglas and fiancée Keith Jones of Fairview, NC, three granddaughters; Michelle Bowser and husband Robert of Brevard, NC, Shana Davis and husband Shane of Pisgah Forest, NC and Misty Douglas of SC, one grandson; Matthew Douglas and wife Sheila of SC, seven great grandchildren; Raven and Morgan Douglas, Allison and Zackary Davis, Tiffany Justice, Asa and Rachael Sizemore, four sisters; Gay Patton, Hazel McMahan, Betty Prebor and Ellen Buch; one brother, John Dills and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

A Celebration of her life service will be held at 12:00 PM, Saturday, August 17, 2013 at English Chapel with Rev. Edward Lawing officiating. Burial will follow Oak Grove Cemetery, Brevard, NC. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM at the church, prior to the service.
