Michael Hugh Wainwright was a kind and generous person who was a lifelong advocate for social justice. Michael passed away on March 17, 2022.
Michael loved his wife Marty Kizer Wainwright of Brevard. He was the devoted father of Ashley (Bryan) Keator of Tulsa, Todd Wainwright of Denver, Brandy Anderson of New York City, and step-son John (Tait) Kellogg of Washington, DC and enjoyed being “Dubby” to Davis and Madeline Keator and Alec and Hoke Kellogg. Michael is also survived by brother Randy Wainwright, sister Donna (Craig) Mayeux, and loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sister Deborah Wainwright and parents Don and Peggy Wainwright.
Michael was highly devoted to both his Brevard and Louisiana communities. He committed himself to public service from the time he was the student government association president of Northeast Louisiana University to helping start Transylvania County’s NAACP chapter to his recent tenure on the Transylvania County Board of Elections. Michael was a graduate of LSU Law School and later worked on Capitol Hill. He loved all things Louisiana and dedicated his career to supporting small organizations in the region, such as the Louisiana Chiropractors Association, the Caddo Parish 9-1-1 District, and The Port of Caddo-Bossier.
Michael was diagnosed with neuro-sarcoidosis in 2010 and navigated substantial health challenges with integrity and grace. Michael and Marty semi-retired to Brevard in 2013 and have loved making the mountains their home. They have been active members of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, where Michael served as Junior Warden. He especially loved working with the Christian Social Concerns Committee in initiating the Laundry Project.
A graveside service will be held at St Paul’s in the Valley cemetery on Saturday, March 26th at 10:00 am. A reception celebrating Michael’s life will be held at 11:00 am at the Wainwright home. Michael was loved by many people; he made the world a better place and will be missed greatly.
