Peter Eddy Burger
Brevard - Peter Eddy "D", "Turtle Man", "Pete & Repeat" Burger, 71, of Brevard, NC died Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at his home.
He was the son of the late Nash K. Burger II and Marjorie Williams Burger. Both of his parents were English teachers. His parents both worked for the NY Times Book Review.
He leaves behind his daughter; Christine Marie Burger Echeverri, "LBG" aka "Small Mare", and her husband Sam Mahfoud and his two grandsons "those crazy boys", "Sir Michael" and his "Blue-Eyed Buddy", David. He is also leaving behind his former wife and lifelong friend, Carol Burger of St. Petersburg, FL, two brothers; Nash Burger and Steve Burger and wife Patsy Walsh and their son Timothy, of Charlottesville, Va.
Peter was a veteran of the US Air Force, serving for four years in the early 60's. He was stationed in Albany, GA, Bogota, Colombia and Lima, Peru.
Peter was born in Jackson, Miss. and grew up in NYC and Freehold, NJ. He also attended the Appalachian School in Penland, NC when he was 8 years old, where his parents were teachers. He was a graduate of Mississippi State University, where he received his Masters in History. He brought his family to Brevard in 1972 and soon joined Brevard College as a history professor where he taught for 23 years. He spent three years in Cedar City, Utah then returned to his real home here in Brevard. He then worked as a trail guide at the Cradle of Forestry.
He loved our Blue Ridge Mountains and his feet graced every path in the Pisgah National Forest (and beyond). Peter was a sensitive, intelligent, quiet, sentimental person who takes with him an amazing knowledge of our forests and our world. He will be greatly missed. There will be no services because he wanted to "receive his flowers while he lived, not a lily slipped into his hand once he was gone".
A special thank you to his neighbors Tom and Barbara St. John who helped him in his last days while his daughter was trying to get here to him. Also, thank you to the folks at Blue Ridge Home Care and Hospice who tried their best to help him these last few weeks.
Memorials may be made to: Cradle of Forestry, In Memory of Peter Burger, P.O. Box 1329, Pisgah Forest, NC 28768.
