Phillip Caldwell

Lt. Col. (retired) Phillip B. Caldwell, 85, of Brevard, passed away on Sunday, June 4, 2017. A native of Warren, Ohio, he was the son of the late Carl Caldwell and the late Elnora Biller Shemet. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his grandson, Sean Robert Caldwell.

Folllowing his graduation from the University of Florida in 1954, he began a 20-year career in the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers. He was recruited for flight school in 1955 and became a fixed wing and helicopter pilot. His tours of duty included two years in Vietnam, deployments in the Panama Canal Zone, Colombia, and Brazil as well as the United States. He earned numerous decorations including the Bronze Star and the Air Medal. In retirement, he became active in church work. He was a guardian ad litem for Transylvania County. Previously, while living in Florida, he was a Commissioner for Soil and Water in Nassau County. His passion for playing bridge and cheering on the Florida Gators enriched his life for many years.

Mr. Caldwell is survived by his wife, Judith Ann Caldwell; sons William Caldwell and partner Dan Koepp of Asheville, NC, and Robert Caldwell of Brevard; grandson Andrew Caldwell and wife Jenni; great-grandchildren Madelyn Caldwell and Evelyn Caldwell; and sister Glenda Palmer and husband Windell of Marianna, FL.

A Memorial Service for Phillip Caldwell will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 12, 2017 at The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Brevard with Rev. Mary Hinkle Shore officiating. A reception will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd "A Place of Grace" campaign, 22 Fisher Road, Brevard, NC 28712.
