Phyllis Cooper

Phyllis McCrary Cooper, 65, went home to be with our Heavenly Father on September 25, 2019. Phyllis will be lovingly remembered by her family and friends. A native of Transylvania County, she was the daughter of Betty George McCrary and the late Judson McCrary. Phyllis was preceded in death by her father, Judson McCrary; her ex-husband, Thomas F. Cooper, Jr.; and her son Thomas F. Cooper, III (TC). She is survived by her mother, Betty McCrary; her daughter, Kimberlee Cooper; and her sisters, Judy Culpepper (Jim) and Kim McCrary. She is also survived by her beloved nephews, nieces, and great nieces.

After graduating from Appalachian State University, Phyllis began her teaching career in Transylvania County. After marrying, Phyllis described “chasing cotton” as she and her family moved due to her husband’s promotions within the textile industry. As a result of moving, Phyllis taught school in North Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, and Alabama. She also taught in Bangkok, Thailand for one year. Her joy was teaching rambunctious middle school children and sparking an interest in reading and learning. Many minds and hearts were touched in her classroom.Phyllis loved the beach, decorating, and traveling. She was the happiest spending quality time with her family.

On Saturday, October 5, 2019, the family will receive friends in celebration of Phyllis’ life from 1PM until 2PM at First Baptist Church of Brevard. A service will follow in the church’s sanctuary at 2:30 PM. The graveside service will be private.
