Phyllis Stout

Phyllis Marie Ingraham Stout, 92, of College Walk, Brevard, NC, died Sunday evening in The Laurels of Hendersonville, NC. Phyllis was born on May 14, 1924, in Gallipolis, OH, and grew up in Point Pleasant, WV. Phyllis Stout was preceded in death by her parents, Marie Anora Kenny Ingraham and Forest Ward Ingraham, and her sister, Patricia Bateson.

She graduated from Point Pleasant High School in 1941 and earned a BA in Psychology from the Pennsylvania College for Women (now Chatham College) in 1945. She was married to Benjamin B. Stout from September 1945 to 1988. Over the course of her adult life, she lived in Morgantown, WV, Ithaca, NY, Petersham, MA, Cornwall-on- Hudson, NY, East Brunswick, NJ, Missoula, MT, Fairfield, CT, and Brevard, NC. She sustained friendships with people in each of these communities throughout her life and served in numerous community organizations along the way with distinction.

Phyllis taught Language Arts in the public schools of East Brunswick, NJ, for 16 years and is remembered fondly by her students. She served on the board and as President of the Friends of the Public Library in Missoula, MT, where she was also President of the League of Women Voters. In Brevard, NC, where
she lived since 1987, she served in the American Association of University Women (AAUW), especially its annual book sale, as President of the Brevard Branch and as state Board member. She volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, the Arts and Literacy Councils, and Rise and Shine in Brevard and was active at College Walk on the Residents Council, including as archivist.

In May of 1999, she received the Women Who are Making a Difference award from Brevard's AAUW, and in August of 2000, Phyllis received the NC Governor's Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service.

Phyllis is survived by three children and their partners, two grandchildren, and one great-grandchild: Bruce D. Stout and Wendy Wolf of Lambertville, NJ; David F. Stout and Sue Ann Higgens of Portland, OR, and his daughter, Sara Henning-Stout of Highland Park, NJ; Susan L. Stout and David Snyder of North Warren, PA, their son and daughter-in-law Benjamin and Rebecca Snyder and their son Nathan Snyder of Falls Church, VA. She is also survived by nieces and nephews: Debbie and Don Clark of Pataskala, OH; Mike and Lisa Bateson of Dublin, OH; and Don and Janey Bateson of Columbus, OH, and their children.

People who had the good fortune to know Phyllis over the years remember her graciousness and commitment to a world in which all people could live full lives, enriched as hers was by words, literature, music, and a loving family.
