Ramona Lee Lawton, 87, of Candler, NC, passed away on December 12, 2024. Born in St. Petersburg, FL, she was the daughter of the late Marion H. and Ruth Virginia Hookstra Lawton.
She grew up in Beaufort, SC, graduating from Beaufort High School. She then attended Mars Hill Junior College where she received an Associates Degree before going to Columbia College, where she received her B.S. Shen then went to the University of Georgia and earned her Master’s of Education and began studying toward a Doctorate. She would later attend Colorado University, Western Carolina University and Appalachian State University where she received a Vocational Supervisor Certification.
She was employed as a Home Economics Department Head for Jacksonville, Florida, then Henderson County, Flat Rock School. She was an extension agent in Colorado and later in South Carolina. As a teacher, she became a mentor for Home Economics students and was the FHA advisor at Flat Rock local, regional and North Carolina State FHA advisor.
She was active in her church activities and in 4-H where she won local, state and national prizes for her entries. Her churches were Cedar Mountain Baptist Church and also Liberty Baptist Church in Candler where she was a current member.
She had taught Sunday School, was a WMU leader, choir member and VBS teacher over her years. She had been on several committees and also cooked Wednesday night suppers for many years. Following school retirement, she became active with the St. Andrews Society, gleaning vegetable fields and collecting foods to deliver to various places.
Funeral Services for Ramona Lawton will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, December 17, 2024 at Liberty Baptist Church in Candler, NC with Rev. Derrick McCarson and Rev. Charlie Sams officiating. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Gardens of Memory in Pisgah Forest.
