Rev. Charles H. Cobb, Jr, 90, of Brevard, passed away on Monday, September 12, 2022. A native of Anderson, SC, he was the son of the late Charles Harold and Lucile Cawthon Cobb. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his first wife, Clemmie Hurst Cobb, his son Matthew Cobb, and his granddaughter, Bethany Cobb.
A graduate of Anderson High School, Rev. Cobb was an Eagle Scout prior to graduation. He also received his BA from King College in Bristol, TN before receiving his Masters of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, VA. He also served in the US Navy Reserves. He received his pilot’s license and later became a certified aircraft mechanic prior to he and his first wife, Clemmie, being commissioned as Missionaries to Brazil where they served as church planters in the effort to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Rev. and Mrs. Cobb returned stateside when she fell ill during their service in Brazil. In 1972 he was called to pastor in Dallas, TX, where he served for 25 years, during which time he also served as chaplain for the Dallas Police Department.
After the death of his first wife, in 1978, Rev. Cobb continued to pastor and serve, continuing the commitment he had made to follow Christ at the age of 16. He remarried, in 1981, to his current wife of now 41 years, Barbara. They retired to the Brevard area in 1997 to be close to family and to continue their ministry.
Over the years he has always loved to build, to tinker, to fix things, and taught others to do so as well. He was always tedious in his projects, taking his time to do them right, to the best of his ability. But his favorite thing to do was always preach and teach others about Jesus.
Rev. Cobb’s loving survivors include his wife of 41 years, Barbara W. Cobb; children: C. Harold Cobb III (Mindy), Evelyn Cobb Sturgill (Michael), Elizabeth Cobb Shirk, Steven L. Cobb (Kelly), Elaine Sweet (Kevin) and George Harvey Cobb; 16 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; his sister, Glenda Hunter (John); and a number of nieces and nephews.
A service remembering the life of Rev. Charles Cobb will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 17, 2022 at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church in Brevard with Rev. Andrew Silman officiating and Rev. Morse Up De Graff. A graveside service was held prior to the service.
