Richard H. Berger, son of the late Newell James and Marjorie Herndon Berger, died Nov. 20, 2013 in Cashiers, North Carolina. He was 83 years old. Mr. Berger graduated from Three Rivers High School in 1948 and went on to graduate from Michigan State University in 1952.

He served his country as a lieutenant in the Korean War as a tank commander. He married Pandora Dickie in 1954 and had two children, Deborah and Richard, Jr. He worked for a period of time for Owens-Illinois in Toledo. In the last thirty years he has been an outstanding builder and contractor in the Highlands/Cashiers area. He was a faithful Eucharistic minister for many years at The Church of the Good Shepherd in Cashiers. He was an avid reader. Mr. Berger had a passion for dogs and was known to all for his generous spirit. His wife, Barbara Jean (Harris) whom he compassionately cared for during her recent illness, died on March 23, 2014.

He is survived by his sister, Rosemary Berger; his children, Deborah (Berger) Neville and Richard Berger, Jr.; his granddaughter, Emily Neville and several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM at Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Cashiers, North Carolina on June 28th 2014, with Rev. Dr. Virginia Monroe officiating. Interment will follow in the memorial garden with Military Graveside rites conducted by North Carolina National Guard Honor Guard.

A reception in Hines Hall will follow the burial.
