Richard Fanning

Richard (Dick) V. Fanning, age 87, died Sunday, April 12, 2015, at home from complications of coronary heart disease. A native and lifelong resident of Brevard, Richard was the only son of the late Leonard and Edna Fanning.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Ruth; two sons and their wives: Ric and Susan Fanning of Fuquay Varina, NC and Ed and Anne Fanning of Charlotte, NC; He also leaves behind two grandchildren: William Fanning of Edenton, NC and Kathryn Fanning of Jerusalem, Israel.

He was a proud veteran of America's Greatest Generation, serving in the US Navy both in Word War II aboard the USS Andromeda and the USS General Randall, and in the Korean War aboard the aircraft carrier USS Leyte. Richard retired from Olin Corporation in the 1980s and enjoyed an active retirement for 30 years. He was a trustee of the English Chapel United Methodist Church in Pisgah Forest.

A graveside ceremony will be held Friday, April 17 at 1:00 pm at Blue Ridge Gardens of Memory with Military Rites conducted by the US Navy Reserve and The Transylvania County Veterans Association Honor Guard. A Memorial Service will follow at 2:00 pm at the English Chapel in Pisgah National Forest.
