Richard "Toby" Tobolic
Brevard - Richard "Toby" Tobolic, 72, went to be with the Lord on March 30, 2010, with the knowledge of his children surrounding him.
He was born April 10, 1937 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Mr. and Mrs. John Tobolic. Toby is survived by his loving wife, Joan "Gram" Tobolic; one brother Steve Tobolic; three daughters, Linda and husband, Donny Credille, of Brevard; Cheryl McHenry of Fayetville, GA; and Peggy and husband, Mike Colburn of Manning, SC; six grandchildren, Douglas and wife, Maria Tritt; Cara and Amber McHenry; Shawn Colburn; Alyse and husband, Simon Tait; Sarah and husband, Matt DelCuerto; and four great grandchildren Emma, Clay, Kaden, and Blake.
Toby enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1956 and served his country with honor for 27 years. He served as a Subsistance Specialist (cook) at duty stations on the Atlantic Ocean, The Great Lakes, The Pacific Ocean and his beloved Alaskan waters. As a retired Chief, Toby and his wife "found this place called Brevard" in 1980 and made their home here. Following retirement, Toby worked for the Transylvania County School System for ten years, and then ran a small lawn care service for several years.
Toby loved his family, spending hours nature-watching from his porches and taking pictures of all the wildlife that surrounded him. Among his most precious pastimes, was "taking the kids for a ride on the tractor". He also loved wood-working, almost as much as he loved his wife, his children, grand-children, and great-grand-children. He especially enjoyed wood turning and was considered among his peers, "a master wood turner". He taught many people the skills of this hobby and thoroughly enjoyed his time at the lathe.
Toby's personal wishes were to have no memorial services or funeral. He wanted to be remembered only as the great man he was...an incredible provider for his family, a devoted husband and Dad, and "Pop" to all of us. Toby's family will be honoring his wished privately. Please send all donations to
