Robert J. (Bobby Joe) Nicholson, 85, 0f Brevard, passed away on Monday, June 18, 2018. Born in Savannah, Georgia, he was the son of the late Guy and Lessie Neely Nicholson. After his father's death in 1938, he and his mother moved to Brevard to be close to relatives. He was proud to be part of Brevard and Transylvania County. He married his high school sweetheart, Judith Ann Mann, and enjoyed 67 years of loving and raising their family. His greatest title was "Pop" to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as he loved them deeply. He was part of their lives regardless of what activity they were involved in. Robert was a member of First Baptist Church of Brevard.
Immediately after high school graduation, he was employed by Olin Corporation and Ecusta Paper. He worked in both the Film and Paper operations in various areas. After 43 years with the company, his last assignment was as Director of Converting Operations.
Robert joined the Army Reserves in 1950 as the conflict in Korea was escalating. He was commissioned as an officer in 1957. Over a period of 37 years, he served in many staff positions and command responsibilities. He proudly retired in 1987 with the rank of Colonel from the 108th Training Division. Robert made many lifetime friends in the Reserves as they trained together to be ready for whatever duty they might be called to do for their country.
In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his step-father, Pat Poor; brother Guy Nicholson, Jr., his sister Sara Mae Nicholson; his son Robert J. Nicholson, Jr., and great-grandson Brayden Nicholson.
His loving survivors include his devote wife of 67 years, Judith Ann Mann; son Keith Nicholson (Nancy); grandchildren: Bam Nicholson (Brooke), Jeniffer Nicholson, Mikey Nicholson (Tracy), Robert J. Nicholson III (Holly), Brian Nicholson, Courtney Nicholson, Hunter Nicholson (Alexis) and Dustin Nicholson (Heather); great-grandchildren Piper Nicholson, Weston Blythe, Bryson and Kai Nicholson, Catherine and Ashleigh Nicholson, Molly King, Landon and Liam Nicholson and Drew Nicholson.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, June 23, 2018, at First Baptist Church in Brevard with a visitation to follow. Interment will be at Blue Ridge Gardens of Memory with Military Honors presented by the United States Army and the Transylvania County Honor Guard.
