Rockwell MacDonald Smith died October 19, 2012, at Brevard, NC.  He was born August 26, 1925, in Roanoke, Virginia.  He was a son of the late James Brookes Smith and Margaret Morton Howison.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Carolyn McInnis in 2006 and a daughter, Carolyn Howison Smith who died in 1992.



He served in the US Army during the Korean conflict, 1950-1956.



He held a BS degree from Hampden Sydney College, 1943.  He did graduate work at the University of Virginia, Clinch Valley Branch and at the University of North Carolina.  He held the BD degree from Colombia Theological Seminary, 1959.  He was licensed and ordained to the Presbyterian Ministry by Abingdon Presbytery, August 8, 1959. He served Pastorates in the Rich Valley and Locust Cove Churches of Saltville, VA, 1959-67; Lakeland, FL, 1967-69; in Norton, VA Presbyterian Church, 1969-73, and in Swainsboro, GA, and Tazwell, VA.  He was known as a "soul winner" at the Rich Valley Church, and his concern for the salvation of individuals marked his ministry, wherever he served.  He was honorably retired by Abingdon Presbytery, effective January 1, 1991.  He spent his retirement years in Black Mountain, NC.



He is survived by his brother Rev. Morton H. Smith and wife Lois K. of Brevard, NC and several nieces and nephews.



A graveside service will be held 11:00 AM, Tuesday, October 23, 2012 at Blue Ridge Gardens of Memory with Rev. Morton H. Smith officiating.
