Roy Davenport

Rev. Roy A. Davenport, 76, of Brevard, passed into Christ's glorious presence on December 27, 2016. A native of Bismarck, North Dakota, he was the son of the late Bernard Edward and Josephine Mary Woodland Davenport. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his son Jeremy Davenport, brothers Jerry Davenport, Paul Davenport, Gene Davenport, Ben Davenport and Dale Davenport, and his sisters Sharon Daffern and Darlene Davenport.

Roy was a graduate of Bismarck High School, Shelton College, and Faith Theological Seminary. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. A minister of the gospel, Roy pastored congregations in Memphis and Maryville, TN, before he moved to Brevard in 1981 to pastor Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church and later Christ Presbyterian Church in Etowah. He also owned and operated RADCO Electric and Tinsley's Saw and Mower. He was active with the Transylvania County Recreation Department as a Little League baseball and soccer coach; he also coached church league basketball and refereed high school soccer. He loved to discuss theology and politics, tell jokes, and coach from the sidelines at his grandkids' games.

His survivors include his wife of 52 years, Rachel Davenport; their children Carolyn Dupee and husband Kenneth of Hendersonville, NC, Rob Davenport, of Brevard, Rev. Scott Davenport and wife Julie of Charlotte and Stephan Davenport Ph.D. and wife Lesley of Chattanooga, TN; grandchildren Tristan, Eowyn, Tessa, Anna, Ian, James, Josiah, Kevin, Nathan, Ellie, Bonnie, Seth, Joseph, Jessica, Joanna and Elinor; sisters Joan Davenport of Texarkana, TX, and Betta Nash of Tooele, UT; brothers Larry Davenport of Minneapolis, MN, David Davenport of Branford, FL, Marc Davenport of DeQuincy, LA, and Tim Davenport of Bismarck, ND.

Services for Rev. Davenport will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, December 31, 2016 at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church in Brevard with Rev. Ben Dowling, Rev. Andy Silmon and Rev. Scott Davenport officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Forest Cemetery in Etowah. There will be a fellowship meal following the interment at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church.
