Rubin Warren Whitt, 91, of Brevard, died Thursday, October 4, 2012 at his home, with his wife by his side.
Born in Mars Hill and raised there during the hard years of the Great Depression, he subsequently served his country in WWII in the 45th Infantry "Thunderbird" Division, seeing combat in France and Germany. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds suffered in action near Aschaffenburg, Germany on Easter Sunday, 1945.
After the war he married Ann (Annie) Hale Whitt in a union that lasted over 62 years until his passing. Ann and their two sons, James and Keith, survive him. He is also survived by two sisters, Catherine Emory and Johnnie Shook.
Mr. Whitt worked for 34 years in the pulp and paper industry as well as establishing a successful private business. His passions away from work included gardening, oral story-telling, and camping in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. He was an excellent marksman and avid deer hunter. He also loved flyfishing, and his flyfishing buddies knew him as a particularly gifted nymph fisherman, joking that he always seemed to know "right where the trout were laying". Late in life he had many happy days participating in the Transylvania Regional Hospital KOALA program, and the family wishes to thank the staff there, as well as many other friends, for their support.
The funeral will be private, but the family will receive friends at the First United Methodist Church at 325 North Broad Street in Brevard, from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday October 8, 2012.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church. Please send to the above address (zip code 28712), designate the check to the "Building Fund" and note that it is in honor of Mr. Whitt.
