Russell N. Chappell, Jr.
August 17, 1932 - November 28, 2023
On Nov. 28, 2023, our dear Dad, Granddad, Uncle and friend Russ departed this life and entered into the presence of Jesus Christ. He joined his wife, Adele, brother Fred, father, Russell Sr. and mother, Mabel. He will be sorely missed by sons Christopher, Thomas and Paul, and special friend and companion, Nancy Nahon. A beloved resident of College Walk since 2014, he will be missed by residents and caregivers as well.
Russell was born August 17, 1932, in Detroit, MI. He grew up there and earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in sociology at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He began his career working for Chrysler Corporation. In 1959, he married Adele Youel. They moved to Rochester, NY in 1961 where their three sons were born, and Russ worked for Xerox Corporation until 1992.
Before retiring to North Carolina, his career in human resources management and consulting focused on improving the satisfaction that Xerox employees obtained from achieving company goals and personal growth. Providing the tools and techniques to enable employee empowerment, growth and teamwork were paramount, expressed through leadership training, improving employee self-management, consulting skills and affirmative action.
From 1994 until 2014, Russ and Adele lived in Glen Cannon in Pisgah Forest, North Carolina. They were very active in St. Philip's Episcopal Church, serving in the choir, vestry, and various committees. Russ was also active in the Lions Club, volunteering for Meals on Wheels, Sharing House, Heifer Project, Brevard Music Center, Glen Cannon Roads Committee, and the local Democratic Party. He was a regular golfer with “the bandits”. He enjoyed travel and especially visits to and from his eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
A Memorial service will be held at 11:00AM Friday, December 29, 2023, at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church.
