Russell Emrich Newton Sr., 95, of Brevard, NC passed away at Tore's Home on December 11, 2010. A native of Louisville KY, Russell was the son of the late Dorothy and Clifford Newton. He moved to Brevard fifteen years ago to be near his older son, Russell Jr.

Russell graduated from the Speed School of Engineering at the University of Louisville in 1937 with a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree. He worked for Southern Bell Telephone Company and enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a radar instruction officer during World War II. Following the war, Russell returned to his career as an electrical engineer with Southern Bell and later South Central Bell. He retired in 1978 and for a number of years continued to serve as chairman of the Kentucky Telco Credit Union. Russell was a long-time member, deacon and treasurer of Highland Baptist Church and Broadway Baptist Church in Louisville, and later Roswell (GA) United Methodist Church, where he was a faithful volunteer with the Finance Office. After moving to Brevard, Russell joined First United Methodist Church and attended services as his health permitted. A skilled woodworker and model train enthusiast, he also enjoyed nearly two decades of boating on the Ohio River.

Russell was predeceased in death by his loving wife of 68 years, Frances L. May Newton, in 2006. He is survived by son, Russell E. Newton Jr, (Ladene) of Brevard; daughter, Dorothy N. Mann (Jim) of Clarksville TN; son William R. Newton (Anne) of Marietta GA; grandchildren Laura M. Magevney of Jacksonville FL, James T Mann Jr of Clarksville TN, Russell Mann of Boston MA, Elizabeth N. Crouse and Thomas Russell Newton of Atlanta GA; and ten great-grandchildren. Russell also is survived by sisters Marjorie N. Marks of Evansville IN and Dorothy N. Ralston of Alpharetta GA and two nieces.

A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Brevard on Saturday, December 18 at 4:00 pm. Anyone wishing to honor Russell's memory is asked to do a good deed, extend a helping hand, or donate to your favorite charity.
