Samuel "Sam" Rufus Glenn, Jr., 82, passed away peacefully January 8, 2015, at his home in Connestee Falls surrounded by his loving family.
He was born November 8, 1932, in Greer, SC, the only child of the late Reverend Samuel Rufus Glenn and Myrtle McElrath Glenn.
As the son of a Methodist minister and U. S. Army chaplain during WWII, Sam moved quite often. He graduated from Fountain Inn High School in 1951 lettering in football, basketball, and baseball, as well as serving as senior class president.
Sam then went to Wofford College where he was on the football team his freshman year and was a campus leader selected for Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities, Blue Key, Student Council, and was elected senior class president. He was also a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon social fraternity.
After graduating from Wofford in 1955, he served in the Navy at the US Naval Air Station in Chamblee, Georgia, where he met his future wife Jane C. Williams.
After three fulfilling careers in banking, health care administration and real estate in Greenville, he retired to Connestee Falls, North Carolina, in 1998.
In Greenville Sam was very active at Trinity United Methodist Church, chairing all levels of church leadership as well as coaching church league basketball. In the community he was equally active as a board member of the Greenville Jaycees, Pendleton Place, Sertoma Club, and chairman of Old Ninety Six Council (Girl Scouts), Greenville Cancer Society, and Alston Wilkes Society.
In Brevard he was a member of St. Philips Episcopal Church where he ushered and served at The Shop of St. Philips, as well as the Christian Social Concerns Committee, and Cemetery Committee.
In Connestee Sam was active on the Finance, Social, and Election Committees of the Connestee Falls Property Owners Association and volunteered at Habitat for Humanity. He greatly enjoyed the fellowship of "The Happy Hackers", a Connestee golf group. Both professionally and personally he was known for his engaging smile and his genuine and caring nature.
Sam had many long and enduring friendships going back to his early childhood. Especially strong were those friends and classmates from junior high and college days.
Sam will always be remembered as the most loving son, husband, father, grandfather, family man, and friend-a true Southern Gentleman.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years Jane Williams Glenn; daughters Cameron "Cammy" G. Chandler and husband H. Daniel of Sumter, SC, Beverly G. Neal and her husband Michael A. Neal of Westport, CT; grandsons James R. Neal of Stamford, CT., Aaron M. Neal of Westport, CT; step grandchildren Danika C. Otto and Lorri A. Chandler of Sumter, SC, Timothy D. Chandler (Laura) of Charleston, SC, and Adam E. Boykin of Columbia, SC; seven step great grandchildren; brothers-in law Captain Richard C. Williams III USN(ret.) and his wife Susanne D. Williams of Norfolk, VA, Captain John E. Sherman USN(ret.) and his wife Betty W. Sherman of Virginia Beach, VA, Thomas O. Ramsey of Atlanta, GA; niece Helen Heselius (Troy), nephew Richard C. Sherman (Andrea) of Virginia Beach; Aunts Peggy M. Bruce and Polly G. McElrath of Greer, SC, and many cousins.
He was predeceased by his in-laws, Rear Admiral Richard C. Williams, Jr. USN(ret.), Aileen Montgomery Williams and Josephine Ramsey Williams; sister-in-law Anne Williams Sherman and nephew John E. Sherman, Jr.
A celebration of his life will be held at St. Philips Episcopal Church in Brevard on Monday, January 19, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. A reception Miller Hall will follow the service.
A private family internment will be at St. Paul's-in-the Valley Cemetery.
