Sherwood "Bullet" McCrary, 63, of Penrose, passed away on Thursday, December 27, 2018. A native of Transylvania County, he was the son of Myrtle Hoxit McCrary and the late Louis Sherwood McCrary. In addition to his father, he was also preceded in death by his brother, Aubrey "Orb" McCrary and nephew, Travis Lee Cox.
A United State Army Veteran, he was severely injured later in an accident. Sherwood, however, refused to let his handicap from the accident stop him from his favorite activities of hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed traveling to Gatlinburg, TN for car shows and races as well as the local car shows in and around Brevard where he would often enter his vehicles in each show.
His mother was faithful and diligent in her care of him since his accident. For 38 years he was able to count on her to tend to his daily needs and preparing him for his daily activities.
Sherwood's courage and strength to overcome the handicaps he was faced with often served to encourage those family and friends around him.
His survivors include his mother, Myrtle H. McCrary (Ed Smith); sisters Annette McCrary and Brenda M. Whitmire, both of Penrose; niece Brittany Cox Maybin (Seldon) of Zirconia, NC; nephew Dylan Blake Zachary and wife Alexa of Brevard; great- niece Leah Maybin and great-nephews Ethan Maybin and Luke Maybin; aunts Davida Hayes and Sandy Hoxit, uncle Dan and aunt Patricia McCrary as well as other aunts and uncles; his good friends Ronnie Carver, Diana Nix and Dwain Cox; and his home care nurse, Maggie Roth.
Graveside Services for Sherwood McCrary will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at Crab Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with Van Whitmire officiating.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to Honor Flight, Inc.
