Shirley Anna Fournet Chappuis, born December 16, 1925 in St. Martinville located in South Louisiana, passed away on March 18, 2016. Shirley was the daughter of Mildred and Valsin Fournet. Shirley was raised in St. Martinville and then attended Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge where she studied Home Economics and Education, graduating in 1946 with a BS degree. Shirley was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Shirley is survived by her husband of 67 years, Donald Chappuis, her seven children, eight grandchildren, her brother Richard Fournet and sister Elsie Boriack. Her surviving children are Julie Chappuis Dear and husband George of Roswell, GA, Nancy Chappuis of Brevard, NC, David Chappuis of Needville, TX, Mary Chappuis Brooker and husband Mark of Austin, TX, Jean Chappuis Baltz and husband Bill of Asheville, NC, Diane Chappuis Clemens and husband Don of Flower Mound, TX, and Barbara Chappuis of Dallas, TX. Her grandchildren are Bradley Dear, Jeffrey Dear, Oliver Baltz, Andrew Baltz, Jacob Clemens, Stephanie Clemens, Joseph Kennemer and Lucy Kennemer. In 1991 Shirley and Don retired to the beautiful and cool mountains of Western North Carolina. Shirley was an accomplished seamstress, something she learned at a very early age. She enjoyed watching her LSU Tiger football. She supported environmental programs and was a member of the Nature Conservancy. Shirley enjoyed traveling and reading extensively on many different subjects. She was a member/officer of The Ramblers Literary Guild while living in Mt. Vernon, IN. Shirley led a long and interesting life, living in Heliopolis (Cairo) Egypt and Edmonton, Canada and traveling extensively in the world, including Israel and Europe. She was an active member of the Sacred Heart Church Ladies' Guild of Brevard and also volunteered for the Rise and Shine program located at Bethel A. Baptist Church. The family would like to thank her healthcare team at Mission St. Joseph Hospital of Asheville for the loving care provided during the last week of her life. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Shirley's honor may be directed to the Nature Conservancy. Funeral services and a reception will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, April 1, 2016 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Brevard, NC. She will be interred at Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery at Black Mountain, NC.
