Scruggs of Brevard. Terry also leaves behind other loved nieces, several nephews, cousins, and a special uncle and aunt, Harold and Carolyn Smith of Evans, Georgia.
During Transylvania County's Sesquicentennial Terry celebrated his proud heritage as a descendent of early Transylvania County pioneers. The Scruggs ancestors arrived in the 1850's settling as farmers in the Glazener Road community.
Following graduation at Brevard High School Terry pursued his undergraduate degree at Mars Hill College where he met his future wife. He then obtained his Masters Degree in Business Administration from Appalachian State University in 1972.
Beginning his career with Jerry Jerome in 1973 as a loan officer, Terry progressed to Vice President of Brevard Federal Savings and Loan. It was during this time he became known through the community for his unique style of positive customer relationships built on professionalism and servant leadership. These skills continued during his employment for 17 years as Finance Director for the City of Brevard. Customers and fellow employees appreciated Terry's consistent diligence, kindness to all, protection of resources, and his sense of duty to those whom he served. He will be forever remembered for his unique wit and joy of taking time to speak to folks, whether customers, fellow employees, or just folks along the streets of Brevard.
Mayor Jimmy Harris described Terry's dedication and commitment to the City of Brevard as most admirable. He also found him to be professional and task oriented. City Council and the Mayor recognized Terry's organizational and leadership skills in 2009 when he served as interim city manager from March through September.
During his life Terry was a member of the Brevard Jaycees, the Brevard Elks Lodge, First Baptist Church and eventually returned to his childhood place of worship at Glady Branch Baptist Church. Terry was a devoted and faithful fan of the NCSU Wolfpack and greatly enjoyed celebrating any wins over UNC-CH and gloating to Dr. Carol Grahl and Dr. Dempsey Bailey. He was known throughout the Brevard community for always wearing a smile, his spontaneous humor, silver hair and mustache, and his trademark laugh. His joys included playing golf, gardening, and cooking-especially hot wings for family and friends.
