Virgil Carlton Stiles, 90, of Penrose, passed away on Sunday, March 25, 2018 at The Elizabeth House in Flat Rock, North Carolina. Born in Macon County, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Claud Daniel and Rhoda Stockton Stiles. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brothers Harry Stiles, John Stiles, Gene Stiles and William Stiles.
A United States Army Veteran who served in World War II, he was a loving husband and father and friend to many. He loved woodworking and had many other talents. He loved to garden, giving much of what he grew to his friends and neighbors. He was an exceptionally humble and generous man.
His loving survivors include his wife of 64 years, Mary E. Stiles; his sisters Dorothy Cassell and Ruth Grogan; his children: Carroll Stiles (Debi) of Blanch, NC, Regina Twomey (Robert) of Cedar Mountain, NC, James Stiles (Stephanie) of Mooresboro, NC and Jeffrey Stiles (Sandy) of Mullins, SC; 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 30, 2018 at Little River Baptist Church with Rev. Chris Farmer and Rev. Mark Reynolds officiating. Military Rites will be performed by the North Carolina National Guard and the Transylvania County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 pm, one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Little River Baptist Church Mission Fund, 51 Little River Road, Penrose, NC 28766.
