Virginia Merrell

Virginia Dare Viola Lee Merrell, 97, of Brevard, NC passed away October 30, 2013 at The Oaks of Brevard.

She was born in Asheville, NC to the late John and Edna Lee. She was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Fritz J. Merrell who died in 2009 and a son, Jack L. Merrell who died in 2011.

Virginia was a member of First Baptist Church of Brevard and Sylvan Garden Club. She served Transylvania County in many different volunteer capacities including Transylvania Youth Association where she and her husband, Fritz, ran the Teen Center. The Transylvania Youth Association building was dedicated in their honor. She also volunteered with the Red Cross, Meals on Wheels and Transylvania Regional Hospital Auxiliary.

She is survived by her daughter; Rita and husband David of Sunset Beach, NC, daughter-in-law; Barbara Severs Merrell of Brevard, grandchildren; Merrell Ashley and wife Allyson, Annandale, VA, Lorraine (Rainey) Ashley, Sunset Beach, NC, John Merrell, League City, TX., Jay Merrell and wife Courtney Cabe, Greenville, SC and Jud Merrell and wife Sarah, Hendersonville, NC, great grandchildren; Zane Merrell, Ahna Merrell, Elizabeth Ashley, Adam Ashley, Ian Ashley and Grayson Merrell and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank all of her special friends and The Oaks for the wonderful care they gave her.

A Celebration of her Life will be held 10:00 AM, Saturday, November 9, 2013 at First Baptist Church of Brevard with Rev. Tommy Crocker officiating. The family will receive friends in the church parlor immediately following the service.
