Z. Smathers

Z. Cecil Smathers, 96, of Pisgah Forest, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2019, at Greenville Memorial Hospital while surrounded by his immediate family. A native of Haywood County, NC, he was the son of the late John Bascombe and Anne Lawrence Smathers. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Beulah Maye Smathers.
A graduate of Brevard College, he enlisted and served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. After his military service, he worked at Olin Chemical Corporation in Brevard until his retirement. Cecil attended and was a founding member of Temple Baptist Church in Pisgah Forest.
His survivors include his son, Roger Keith Smathers and his wife Sharon P. Smathers of Taylors, SC; grandson Ian Keith Smathers and his wife Katy of Taylors, SC; granddaughter Amber "Brook" Smathers of Asheville, NC; and great-grandchildren: Alyanna Lollis of Charleston, SC and Hunter and Keegan Smathers of Taylors, SC.
Funeral Services for Cecil Smathers will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, January 18, 2019 in the Chapel of Moore-Blanchard Funerals & Cremations with Rev. Paul Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Gardens of Memory with Military Rites performed by the Transylvania County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 1:00 - 2:00 PM, one hour prior to the service.
